
Dr Rachel Goldlust is a graduate in history having received her doctorate from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia in 2020. Her thesis traced the environmental values embodied by moving off-grid across Australia from the late 19th century.
With a background in planning, sustainable housing and environmental education, Rachel's interests range across ex-urban migration and planning, sustainable lifestyles and design, community and co-operative living systems, permaculture design and application, Australian political and social history and environmental thought and action. Rachel regularly writes for both online and print and appears on radio and television discussing all things off-grid, energy efficiency, getting off gas, planning and ex-urban migration.
Rachel has worked as a strategic planner, research assistant, project officer, project manager and as a private consultant for off-grid and natural building projects. She has completed the basic Earthship Design certificate from Earthship Biotecture in Taos, NM in 2011 and achieved her Level 1 PDC in June 2022 with Castlemaine Permaculture Hub.
In her current role as sustainability researcher, Rachel regularly presents on topics relating to energy efficiency, household energy, residential planning and sustainability, and specifically the barriers and issues relating to renewable supply and getting off gas. She has attended the AHURI National Housing Conference, and talked on panels ranging from community energy displays such as Electrify Boroondara, Future Energy, and the All-Energy Expo at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Center.
Rachel regularly presents at the Off Grid Festival in Eldorado, Vic and the Sustainable Living Festival. She is passionate about bringing her work and writing to wider audiences and is available to speak or consult on projects across housing, design, natural building, off-grid systems and her work across Australian 20th century environmental and cultural histories, both urban and rural.
